What Is a Good Instagram Engagement Rate? (And How to Improve It)

October 11, 2026 · 1 min read

Engagement rate shows how many of your followers actually react to your posts. It matters because brands and the Instagram algorithm both care about it.

How to calculate it

Add the likes and comments on a post, divide by your follower count, then multiply by 100. Example: 50 likes plus 10 comments on an account with 2,000 followers is 60 / 2,000 = 3%.

What is a good rate?

It varies by niche and account size. As a rough guide, many people see 1% to 3% as decent and above that as strong. Smaller accounts usually have higher rates than big ones, so compare yourself with accounts of a similar size.

How to improve it

  • Ask a simple question in your caption.
  • Use Reels, carousels, and stories, not only single photos.
  • Reply to comments quickly.
  • Post when your followers are online.
  • Remove content that gets no reaction and make more of what works.

Likes can help the first impression

A post with some likes already looks more worth stopping for. Many creators add likes to new posts to give them a stronger start while they build real engagement.
